Iran Has Handed Pakistani Mediators Its Plan To End The War

What does it stipulate?

Iran has sent the intermediary country Pakistan its response to the United States' peace proposal. Инициатива сосредоточена на прекращении войны.

Об этом 10 мая сообщило иранское информационное агентство IRNA. The journalists cited a statement from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif: the latter said that the army chief, Field Marshal Sayed Asim Munir, confirmed receiving the latest response from Iran.

"Pakistan will sincerely continue its efforts to promote peace.... With enthusiasm and determination, we seek to bring peace to our neighbors and contribute to sustainable security in the region and the world," the prime minister assured.

What Tehran is proposing

In Reuters noted that according to the Iranian proposal, the current phase of talks could focus solely on ending hostilities in the region.

Sources told the news agency that the latest peace effort is aimed at an interim memorandum of understanding: it should stop the war and settle shipping in the Strait of Hormuz while the sides discuss a more comprehensive agreement. The issues causing the most controversy (particularly the Islamic Republic's nuclear program) will be resolved later, already in the final agreements.

Tehran says talks are continuing

Pakistani Ambassador to Russia Faisal Niaz Tirmizi says Iran and the US have not reached an impasse in their negotiations, IRNA writes.

"An impasse is when the sides completely stop communicating with each other. Thank God they are still exchanging messages through Pakistan. This gives me a lot of hope," Tirmizi said.

The diplomat added: "We believe that sooner or later there will be a result." He noted that such dialog sometimes lasts for years.

"If you look at the history of the Korean War, negotiations lasted three to four years. As for Vietnam, negotiations lasted five to six years. Because of the Soviet campaign in Afghanistan, there were years of negotiations in Geneva. The U.S. negotiations with the Taliban in Qatar also lasted years," the Iranian ambassador gave examples.
