Israel Eliminated The Last Of The Top Hamas Commanders Involved In The Oct. 7 Attack

He not only led the militants but personally held the hostages.

Israel said it targeted Izz al-Din al-Haddad, a Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip and head of the group's military wing, in an airstrike on Gaza City.

It was reported by The Times of Israel.

The airstrike occurred on Friday, May 15, in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City. According to local medics, the strike struck a residential building.

Medics reported at least three dead and about 20 wounded. Whether al-Haddad was among them has not been officially confirmed.

An Israeli military source said the Israeli Air Force attacked a shelter apartment where the Hamas leader was believed to be staying. At the same time, a car that was leaving the area of the attack was hit - to prevent escape.

Officials said three Israeli planes were involved in the operation, dropping 13 bombs.

Shortly after the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that they had personally authorized the strike on al-Haddad.

The joint statement called him "the commander of Hamas' military wing and one of the main organizers of the October 7 massacre."

"Al-Haddad was responsible for the killings, kidnappings and damage to thousands of Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers," the statement read.

The Israeli side also claims that he held hostages, organized attacks against the Israeli military and refused to support a US-proposed plan to disarm Hamas and demilitarize the Gaza Strip.

What is known about Izza al-Din al-Haddad?

Izz al-Din al-Haddad became the de facto military leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip after Israel eliminated Muhammad Sinwar in May 2025.

The publication noted that he is the highest-ranking Hamas official whom Israel has struck against since the U.S.-brokered truce in October.
