(Updated) NATO planes were taking to the skies.

The Lithuanian army said Wednesday morning that a drone was allegedly spotted near Lithuania's border with Belarus, prompting the activation of a NATO air policing mission. It was also reported that airspace was temporarily closed over Vilnius airport. Later, the army announced a "Red" signal in Vilnius County - residents are advised to go to shelters, LRT reported. The air alert was canceled at 10:47 Minsk time.

"We inform that the reason for sending out warnings to the population was the recorded radar mark with signs characteristic of unmanned aerial vehicles. The activity is observed near the Lithuanian border. The NATO air police mission has been activated," the Lithuanian Army said in a statement.

It was reported earlier that residents of Ignalina, Utena, Shviančiai and Zarasai districts received warnings. The yellow level of air danger was declared there. Later, an update was published - an air attack warning was also sent to residents of Vilnius County. The Red signal was announced in the region, and residents were warned to go to shelters.

The National Crisis Management Center emphasized that schools and kindergartens were obliged to move children to shelters.

It is stated that NATO's air police mission was activated after the radar marker was fixed in Belarus.

The country's leaders were moved to shelters due to the declared air alert in connection with the drone threat. Public transportation was stopped in the Lithuanian capital.
