The Ukrainian Armed Forces Forced "Yandex Taxi" To Use Google

The outages affected taxis and dozens of other services.

"Yandex Taxi" recommended that drivers use Google Maps following disruptions to its built-in navigation system caused by attacks on the company's data centers. A corresponding notification appeared in the “Yandex Pro” app, according to The Bell (translation by Charter97.org).

“Navigation may be temporarily unavailable,” the message to drivers stated. The company also advised users to download an offline map of their city to maintain access to maps and some of the app’s features even during connectivity issues.

From October 8 to 11, Ukrainian drones attacked three Yandex data centers in the Ryazan, Kaluga, and Vladimir regions. Operations were halted at two of the sites, while at the third, part of the infrastructure was put out of commission.

The disruptions affected more than just navigation. Drivers complained about delays in trip status updates, the disappearance of order histories, and the appearance of so-called “phantom orders,” where the app directed them to passengers who had already booked another car. Bonuses that affect taxi drivers’ earnings also stopped working properly.

The problems extended far beyond the taxi service. Disruptions were observed in the operation of “Yandex Pay,” “Russian Post,” “Disk”, the cloud platform, and the websites of other companies using Yandex’s infrastructure. The issues also affected users in several countries outside Russia, including in Belarus.
