Scientists conducted an unusual experiment.

For those who have to work the night shift, a cup of coffee may be the best way to overcome instant fatigue. However, this burst of alertness may also have some consequences, scientists say.

A new study has found that a dose of caffeine at night can lead to impulsive behavior and cause consumers to take more risks. As reported by the resource The Takeout, scientists from the University of Texas at El Paso studied the effects of caffeine on fruit flies at night.

In the experiment, scientists used a species whose genetic and nervous systems are similar to humans. The researchers found that the caffeine consumed at night caused the fruit flies to behave unpredictably.

"Under normal conditions, flies stop moving when exposed to strong airflow. We found that flies that consumed caffeine at night were worse at restraining movements and exhibited impulsive behavior, such as reckless flying, despite these adverse conditions," said researcher Eric Saldes.

It is confirmed that impulsivity caused by nighttime coffee consumption is more pronounced in female flies. Female fruit flies exhibited more impulsive behavior despite receiving the same dose of caffeine as males.

"Flies do not have human hormones such as estrogen, which suggests: other genetic or physiological factors are the cause of hypersensitivity in females," explained research team member and professor of biological sciences Kyun-An Han.

The scientists noted that the findings from the experiment may help explain how drinking coffee at night affects people's impulsive behavior. But further research is needed to provide definitive data.
