The purpose of the mission is named.
The U.S. military has reopened its jungle training school in Panama after a 25-year hiatus.
According to Bloomberg.
The purpose of the mission, a joint exercise with Panamanian forces, is to improve combat readiness for jungle warfare.
Bloomberg writes that lessons in rainforest survival, medical evacuation and patrolling - which are being imparted to soldiers, sailors and Marines - have taken on new meaning.
The reason for this has been U.S. President Donald Trump signaling a willingness to strike at the heads of Mexican drug cartels or dismantle Cuban defenses. These warnings seem even more compelling after his surprise takeover of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January.
The media outlet also notes that the situation has escalated since Trump unveiled a security strategy at the end of 2025 that he said would ensure "American dominance in the Western Hemisphere."
"He has floated the idea of attacking underground drug labs, pushed for regime change in Cuba and is considering taking back the Panama Canal by force," the publication said.
Trump is known to have ordered the largest-ever military buildup in Latin America as his administration seeks to secure access to resources such as oil, lithium and rare earth metals. The US also intends to protect shipping lanes, fight drug gangs, crack down on illegal migration and confront China, which has been consolidating its influence in the Americas for 20 years.
