It Has Been Announced Which Coins Banks In Belarus Will Accept

New requirements for accepting damaged coins are being introduced.

The National Bank has expanded the list of damaged coins that banks are required to accept for exchange. This was reported by the regulator’s press service.

Coins that have lost part of their structure—for example, those that have been filed down, have scratches, through-holes, or signs of metal removal—are now eligible for exchange. The main condition is that the denomination must be clearly identifiable and that the coin must be recognized as a Belarusian coin.

Banks will also be required to accept coins that have been separated into parts—such as a ring and a core—provided both parts are intact. Coins that have been reassembled will also be exchanged, even if the sides, images, or inscriptions do not align correctly. Previously, such coins were considered invalid for payment and could not be exchanged.

The National Bank clarified that, as before, coins with minor damage can be exchanged: scuffs, minor scratches, discoloration, loss of luster, changes in shape and size, distortions of images and inscriptions, as well as signs of exposure to temperature, corrosion, or corrosive substances.

The changes will take effect upon publication of the resolution—it has not yet been published.

In addition, the regulator has specified the requirements for reproducing images of Belarusian banknotes—they may now be placed only on one side of the paper. The size of the reproduction must be less than 75% or more than 125% of the size of the actual banknote.
