Bloomberg: Putin Personally Ordered The Bombing Of The Lavra

The Russian dictator has a special “connection” to a Ukrainian holy site.

On the night of June 15, during a massive attack on Ukraine, the Russian army sent a drone into the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve, which struck, among other targets, the Assumption Cathedral. The strike was carried out despite the fact that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has a personal connection to this holy site.

He last visited the site in the summer of 2013 to pay his respects at the grave of Pyotr Stolypin, a reformer of the Russian Empire. More details on this can be found in the article Bloomberg .

What Connects Putin to Lavra

The article notes that Stolypin, who was a “political hero” to the Kremlin leader, was unable to protect one of Orthodoxy’s holiest sites from a Russian drone attack.

For a long time, Russia’s political and church leadership viewed the monastery in central Kyiv as a shared spiritual symbol for Ukrainians and Russians. However, following the recent attack, significant damage has been reported there, including a large hole in the roof, which poses a risk to the preservation of the collection of icons inside.

The damage resulting from the Russian Federation’s attack is estimated at a minimum of 500 million hryvnias (approximately $11.1 million). As a result of the Russian shelling, 19 buildings on the Lavra’s grounds were damaged, and approximately 80% of the roof of one of the cathedrals was destroyed.

At the same time, the Russian side denies deliberately targeting the monastery and claims that it is allegedly complying with the provisions of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.

As noted in the article, Putin had a personal connection to this religious site and visited it at least three times during his presidency.

His last official visit to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra took place on July 27, 2013. On that occasion, he visited the Assumption Cathedral—which, nearly 13 years later, would be struck by a Russian drone—and took part in a solemn prayer service marking the 1,025th anniversary of the baptism of Kievan Rus’.

As is well known, on the night of June 15, Russia carried out yet another attack on Kyiv, launching missiles and drones. The aggressor country’s military deliberately targeted the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra: a drone struck the building’s roof, causing a fire.

Subsequently, experts determined exactly how the building of the Cathedral of the Dormition at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was damaged as a result of the Russian Federation’s terrorist attack on the capital. Following the strike, the roof caught fire, and the interior of the building was destroyed.
