Voting Has Begun In Armenia In Crucial Parliamentary Elections

The results will determine the country's future foreign policy course.

Regular parliamentary elections started in Armenia at 08.00 local time on June 7. 2005 polling stations opened across the country, "Novosti-Armenia" reported. These elections are called decisive - they will determine the future foreign policy course of the country: either it will continue a cautious turn towards the West under the incumbent prime minister, or return to the orbit of Moscow's influence under the leadership of the pro-Russian opposition.

According to Euronews, voters will have to choose between incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's centrist Civil Pact party and a fragmented pro-Russian opposition openly backed by the Kremlin.

The key opposition force is the Strong Armenia bloc, which is led by former President Robert Kocharyan and Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan. The latter is participating in the campaign while under house arrest.

On the eve of the election, the European Union and the United States expressed unequivocal support for Nikol Pashinyan. US President Donald Trump expressed "full and unconditional support" for the prime minister's re-election, while European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen noted that "Europe is firmly on Armenia's side" amid economic pressure from Moscow.

According to a Breavis poll conducted days before the vote, Pashinyan's party could win more than 60% of the vote, allowing him to reinforce the country's strategic pivot to the West. At the same time, according to the same poll, no opposition party will be able to overcome the 12% threshold.

The situation before the elections was tense. On June 6, the Armenian Investigative Committee detained six candidates from the Strong Armenia opposition bloc on charges of vote-buying and money laundering. Media also reported about a sharp increase in the number of Armenian citizens arriving from Russia to vote.

How will the elections be held?

According to Armenia's Central Election Commission, there are 2 million 505 thousand 102 people on the voter lists. Eighteen political forces are taking part in the elections: 16 parties and two blocs. Among them are Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Pact party, Strong Armenia bloc, Prosperous Armenia party, Armenian National Congress and others.

International observers from OSCE/ODIHR, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, PACE, European Parliament and other organizations will monitor the voting process.

The Central Election Commission of Armenia has set a schedule for informing about the voting and vote counting (one hour earlier than Minsk time):

from 09.The CEC will start publishing data on the voting process;

from 12.00 to 21.00 with a three-hour interval, the CEC will announce information on the turnout;

at 20.00 polling stations will close and vote counting will begin;

from 00.00 on June 8, preliminary results will be announced as they are received from polling stations;

until 20.00 on June 8, the CEC will summarize and officially publish the preliminary results of the voting.
