Peter Magyar proposed enshrining the initiative in the constitution.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has called for lowering the voting age from 18 to 16. The prime minister wrote about the initiative on his Facebook page.

He proposed enshrining the new rule in the constitution, with amendments to be drafted over the coming year. According to Magyar, participation in politics and public life has once again become trendy and appealing to young people.

“Young people have finally realized that they, too, can influence decisions on issues that concern us all. I am convinced that the overwhelming majority of young people under the age of 18 today are sufficiently informed and prepared to participate in collective decision-making,” the head of government wrote.

In most European Union countries, the right to vote is granted upon reaching the age of 18, but Austria, Belgium, and Germany allow their citizens to vote starting at age 16 and to run for president two years later.

Previously, Magyar had already expressed his willingness to support an amendment to the Hungarian Constitution stipulating that the country’s presidential elections be held by direct universal suffrage of all citizens, rather than solely by members of parliament, as is currently the case. His government also introduced an amendment to the constitution limiting the prime minister’s term to two four-year terms and proposed setting a limit on parliamentary terms at three four-year terms.
