The victory over the Argentines came in overtime.
The Spanish national team defeated Argentina 1–0 in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match took place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
As expected, the Spanish team dominated possession from the opening minutes, while the Argentines played defensively. Early in the match, Lamine Yamal had a decent shot on goal, and later Mikel Oyarzabal hit the target. Argentina did not create a single scoring opportunity in the first half.
After the break, the pattern of play remained the same: the Spanish stepped up the pressure, pinning their opponents in their own half. Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni tried to change the course of the game with substitutions, but Lionel Messi and his teammates couldn’t get anything going on offense.
In stoppage time of the second half, Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card for a rough foul, leaving his team a man down.
The Spanish team was unable to break through their opponents’ defense in regulation time. In the first extra time period, the referee disallowed a goal by Nico Williams due to a controversial foul in the Argentine penalty area.
Early in the second extra time period, Ferran Torres sent the ball over the crossbar after a header from Williams.
The Spanish national team won the World Cup for the second time in history, stripping Argentina of its title as defending champion.
