A theory has emerged on Russian Telegram channels that the military aircraft that crashed near Moscow may have been shot down by its own air defense forces—contrary to the Russian Ministry of Defense’s official account of a technical malfunction.

One Russian military blogger suggested that questions should be directed at the “Bars-Moscow” air defense unit—a unit whose creation was announced by Russian authorities in mid-June.

According to the official version from the Ministry of Defense, the preliminary cause of the crash was a technical malfunction of the aircraft. The ministry did not specify the aircraft model, but the Kremlin-controlled newspaper *Kommersant*, citing a source, reported that it was a Su-57—a Russian fifth-generation fighter jet that Putin called “the best in the world” in June.

According to Russian military analyst Kirill Mikhailov, in this case, some observers are leaning toward the “friendly fire” theory.
