"That's Exactly What Ukrainians Expect From Drapato"
Petr Oleshchuk

The new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is highly respected.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Major General Mykhailo Drapaty as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Oleksandr Syrskyi has been relieved of his duties.

The website Charter97.org asked Ukrainian political scientist and professor at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Petro Oleshchuk what to expect from the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:
— Drapaty is a career military officer who has been fighting since 2014. Back then, as a major (he is now a major general), Drapaty played an active role in the liberation of Mariupol. Even then, he attracted widespread attention.

He enjoys considerable authority among military personnel and within Ukrainian society. For a general and commander, he is quite young—he is 43 years old. Everyone expects him to bring new approaches to the management of the army.
The renewal of the command structure is a trend that began earlier but will now continue. Younger generals are joining the command of Ukraine’s armed forces—generals who came of age in independent Ukraine and rose to general-level positions by starting from the bottom, directly commanding their respective units.
That is why he commands significant respect and trust. Everyone expects him to continue the reforms that were previously initiated. Specifically, this includes the transition to a corps-based system, as well as the overall reform of the armed forces’ command structure.

Everyone is looking forward to the continued modernization of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is, in principle, a rather significant period, marked by the Ukrainian president’s upcoming visit to the United States; there is frequent discussion of new, radical sanctions against Russia, and, more broadly, a new phase of cooperation between the U.S. and Ukraine.

I believe that the arrival of such new leaders will help strengthen relations and enhance cooperation.
