Over the course of thousands of years, nothing has changed there—neither the mindset nor the imperial ambitions.
Mykhailo Drapaty has been fighting against the Russians since 2014. Even back then, as a battalion commander, he realized that a major war with the neighboring country was inevitable.
In a 2023 interview admitted that at the start of Russia’s invasion of Crimea and the unrest in Donbas, he felt fear as he anticipated an inevitable clash with the northern neighbor. After all, it was all a great unknown. But over time, that fear quickly gave way to the daily grind of combat operations.
The general said that even before 2014, he suspected that war with Russia was inevitable, since after Ukraine gained independence, the issue of a final break with Moscow remained unresolved.
“We see that you cannot call a nation a neighbor when its leadership has no right to exist in the civilized world. Over thousands of years, nothing has changed there—neither in mentality nor in imperial ambitions,” Drapaty said.
On July 21, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Major General Mykhailo Drapaty will become the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, replacing Oleksandr Syrskyi.
