Sources within British intelligence have revealed the Kremlin's plans.
Britain and its NATO allies may face a direct challenge from Putin within a few months—this is how intelligence agencies will test the new government of Andy Bernama, while Trump remains focused on Iran.

Why now, specifically?
According to intelligence reports, Putin will try to exploit any lapse in Britain’s resolve now that Bernam has replaced Keir Starmer as prime minister.
“There is now a strong belief that Putin is preparing some form of direct confrontation with NATO in the next two months. Several factors are contributing to this—the belief that Trump is distracted by Iran, and signs of a rift among Ukraine’s leadership,” said one intelligence source.
How Russia Is Already Changing Routes
The publication also found that Moscow is already attempting to stretch British resources by rerouting a “shadow fleet” of oil tankers to bypass the English Channel —after one of them was intercepted by the Royal Marines last month.
Now, ships carrying millions of barrels of oil to circumvent Western sanctions are heading into the Atlantic through the waters north of the Shetland Islands.
Just as Burnam was taking office as prime minister last Monday, a Russian frigate conducted a live-fire exercise just 46 miles south of Plymouth.
Why This Might Be a Personal Disappointment for Putin
The source noted that Putin’s own frustration during the war in Ukraine is also a factor.
“There’s a sense that if he (Putin) can’t somehow change the dynamics on the battlefield, the war will be lost,” the source said, adding that the change in the British government would also prompt the Russian president to “test” Bernam and try to exploit any potential disagreements between the old and new administrations.
Threat from Iran
These warnings come amid threats by Iran to strike British bases, which Tehran considers “legitimate targets” for allowing American bombers to operate from their territory as the conflict escalates.
Britain allowed the U.S. to use bases such as RAF Fairford only on the condition that the operations would be exclusively “defensive” in nature. However, according to the publication, the threats from Iran are so serious that British intelligence agencies have launched a large-scale covert operation to counter a possible attack on this base.
Reaction from the UK Defense Minister
The new Defense Minister Wes Stritting discussed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and defense investments with his U.S. counterpart Pete Gagsett on Friday. On the same day, the Ministry of Defense stated that the UK is “ready 24/7” to defend itself against air and missile threats.
“Russia should have no doubt about the resolve of this government and this prime minister to stand up to Russian aggression—not only in Ukraine, but also any aggression against Britain and our allies. “Just this week, we invested more than 700 million pounds in the advanced fighter jet program,” Stritting said.
