He is suspected of fraud.
On Monday in Yerevan, a businessman and the leader of the pro-Russian opposition party “Prosperous Armenia” was detained on suspicion of fraud Gagik Tsarukyan, who is referred to as “Lukashenko’s friend”.
This was reported by Armenpress, citing information from the Investigative Committee.
As part of one of the criminal cases, the Investigative Committee received information that a number of individuals led by Gagik Tsarukyan likely committed fraud and money laundering on an exceptionally large scale between 2022 and 2024.
According to law enforcement agencies, members of the criminal group operating under Tsarukyan’s leadership, under the pretext of developing trade-economic ties between Iran and Armenia, reached agreements with Iranian citizens, established joint legal entities, and—using a logistics scheme—imported 52 vehicles, equipment, fuel, and various goods into the country.
Investigators allege that after the import, customs declarations and other official documents were forged, and property with a total value of approximately 8.13 billion drams ($21.07 million) was fraudulently misappropriated.
The group members laundered the assets by forging import documentation, disposing of some of the goods based on forged documents, and commingling the proceeds with legitimate income.
In addition to Tsarukyan, another suspect has been detained in connection with this case.
It should be noted that the politician heads the pro-Russian party “Prosperous Armenia,” which failed to win seats in parliament following the June elections.
Gagik Tsarukyan and Alexander Lukashenko maintain close ties—Tsarukyan refers to him as “his friend.” The Belarusian Embassy in Armenia is located near Tsarukyan’s mansion in the village of Arindzh on the outskirts of Yerevan.
