FT: The Fuel Crisis Has Affected 50 Million Russians

Ukrainian strikes have knocked out up to 40% of Russia's oil refining capacity.

Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian targets may have disabled between 20% and 40% of Russia's oil refining capacity. This is reported by the Financial Times reports, citing analysts’ estimates.

In June, Russia refined an average of 4.1 million barrels of oil per day, which is 28% less than the five-year average and 35% below its nominal capacity.

Ukraine significantly intensified its strikes on Russian oil infrastructure in May. Since then, the aggressor country’s 10 largest refineries have been targeted, including Russia’s largest facility — the Omsk Refinery, located 2,500 km from the front lines, which accounts for approximately 7% of the country’s refining capacity.

The fuel shortage is already affecting 50 million Russians, or 35% of the population, according to an FT analysis.

By July 8, local authorities or retailers had imposed restrictions on fuel sales in most regions of the Russian Federation.

By June 25, nearly 50 Russian regions had imposed some form of restriction on fuel sales, while long lines at gas stations were reported across the country. A state of emergency is officially in effect in Crimea, and gasoline is sold only with electronic vouchers.
