Trump Has Appealed To The Supreme Court Over The Ban On Building A Ballroom At The White House

Construction had previously been halted

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to allow construction of a ballroom on the White House grounds to continue. This was reported by NBC News.

The petition was filed on August 14 and concerned the construction of a “spacious White House ballroom.” The move followed an August 7 ruling by the Washington, D.C., Court of Appeals, which upheld a federal judge’s earlier decision to halt work on the project pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia affirmed the injunction issued by District Judge Richard Leon.

Attorney General Dean John Sauer stated in the complaint that the enforcement of this court order would unfairly vest in a single district judge the authority of the sole arbiter — the one who would decide which further construction is “absolutely necessary” to ensure the safety of the President, his family, White House staff, and visitors, including foreign officials, as well as the presidents and prime ministers of other countries.

The appellate court’s decision has not yet taken effect, so construction of the facility continues while the Supreme Court considers its next steps. The deadline for a ruling is August 21.
