Construction Workers In Belgium Stumbled Upon A Stash Of Gold

In Belgium, construction workers renovating a house discovered a cache of gold—reportedly worth 9 million euros—bricked into the basement walls.

As noted, the builders stumbled upon the hidden gold bars and coins while drilling holes to install new sewer pipes on the property in East Flanders.

This discovery has sparked interest in who will get to keep the find, as both the construction workers and a local charity that owns the property are claiming it.

After launching an investigation, the police warned people not to come to the scene in search of other treasures, noting that the house had been “turned upside down” and all the gold had been transported to a safe location.

The construction workers, including an 18-year-old teenager working a summer job, discovered the treasure while working on the building’s foundation. Shortly afterward, they reported the discovery to the police and explained that keeping it for themselves was not an option.

The police, for their part, expressed hope that the find would end up “in the right hands” and change people’s lives.

Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to claim the treasure, although the local prosecutor who launched the investigation noted that it is not yet known who that might be.
