Media Reports: An Attempt Was Made To Bomb Russian Aerospace Forces Commander Chaika At A Restaurant In Central Moscow
Alexander Chaiko

The identities of the three victims have been confirmed.

At a restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow, a homemade explosive device detonated, TASS reports, citing a statement from the National Anti-Terrorism Committee’s press center.

Three people were killed in the explosion: a restaurant patron, his security guard, and a woman who was attempting to smuggle a bomb into the building; 21 people were injured, reports The Moscow Times.

The target of the explosion was guests at a private event on the terrace of the Balzi Rossi restaurant, according to *Kommersant*. According to the publication, the party was heavily guarded. A woman who attempted to smuggle an explosive device inside told the security guard who stopped her that she was carrying a gift in a box; however, the security guard decided to inspect the box, at which point the explosion occurred.

“The bomb was detonated remotely. The force of the explosion was equivalent to one kilogram of TNT, and the device itself was loaded with metal pellets, which is why people on the restaurant’s terrace were also injured,” a source told the publication. According to the source, the female courier was “literally blown to pieces”; her arm was found on the road more than ten meters from the site of the explosion.

The publication ASTRA, citing an eyewitness, reported that a general’s birthday was being celebrated at Balzi Rossi. On August 1, two Russian generals celebrate their birthdays: Major General Vladimir Seliverstov, who commanded the 106th Airborne Division and participated in the 2022 offensive on Kyiv, and Lieutenant General Alexander Yaroshevich — head of the Ministry of Defense’s Department of Logistics, writes military analyst Yan Matveev. “But, of course, they might not have celebrated on the exact day. There is speculation that there was a party there in honor of Chaiko, the commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces,” Matveev notes.

Supporting the theory that Chaiko was celebrating his birthday at Balzi Rossi is a video posted by Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shariy. It shows the restaurant’s dining room, with a banner on the wall reading “Alexander—55 Years Old.” Chaiko turned 55 on June 27.
