The target of the explosion at the upscale Balzi Rossi restaurant in central Moscow may have been the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces Alexander Chaiko, who is on trial in Ukraine for war crimes. At the start of the war, he commanded the troops involved in the Bucha massacre, and he was appointed commander-in-chief in May of this year, according to UNIAN.

The explosion at the restaurant occurred on the evening of August 1. According to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, three people were killed and more than 20 were injured as a result of the explosion.

Z-blogger Kirill Fedorov and the blog “Notes of a Veteran” report that the explosion at the restaurant was directed against Chayko.

According to preliminary reports, the woman most likely did not know the contents of the package; she claimed it contained a gift.

The bomb was detonated remotely. The explosive’s power was equivalent to one kilogram of TNT, and the device itself was packed with metal pellets. The explosion killed the woman carrying the bomb, the security guard who had refused her entry, and another restaurant patron. At least 21 other people were injured.

It is not yet known for certain whether Chaiko was injured. Some media outlets report that he is alive: he allegedly read a message sent to him on Telegram.
