Tensions have been building between the Italian prime minister and the U.S. president.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed her relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump in a rare in-depth interview The New York Times, touched on the subject of her relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, acknowledging that reality turned out to be far more complicated than expected.
According to her, her ideological alignment with Trump on issues of immigration and criticism of “cancel culture” initially gave reason to expect easy mutual understanding, but in practice, things turned out differently—over time, significant tension built up between its government and the administration in Washington.
This tension peaked in July, when Trump claimed that the Italian prime minister had allegedly “begged” him to take a joint photo with her at the June G7 summit in France—which sparked a public scandal between the leaders. Earlier, in June, Trump sharply criticized Italy for refusing to grant U.S. troops access to its bases for operations against Iran, calling Rome’s behavior unacceptable and singling out Meloni as one of the most heavily criticized allies.
In an interview, Meloni admitted that she had not been in direct contact with Trump for several weeks. When asked whether a conversation was planned after the summer break, she gave an evasive answer—simply “we’ll see.” At the same time, the prime minister emphasized that she still considers Western unity to be of fundamental importance.
At the same time, Meloni made it clear that she does not base Italy’s foreign policy strategy on personal sympathies between leaders—strategic decisions, she said, are dictated by the country’s interests, not by the relationships between specific politicians.
Speaking more broadly about foreign policy, Meloni reiterated a point she has made before: she finds the idea of a subservient Italy—one that sees itself as a second-rate country—unacceptable. According to her, her goal is to bring about the most far-reaching “revolution of pride” for Italian society.
It should be noted that earlier, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed outrage over statements by U.S. President Donald Trump claiming that she had allegedly begged the White House chief for a joint photo at the G7 summit.
