A fire broke out at one of Russia's largest oil refineries.

On the night of August 26, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck one of Russia’s largest oil refineries—Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez in Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

This was reported by Charter97.org citing the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a statement from the Unmanned Systems Forces, and a statement by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The General Staff confirmed that a fire broke out on the refinery’s premises as a result of the strike; the extent of the damage is currently being assessed.

The Unmanned Systems Forces noted that the Russian plant was struck by operators of the 1st Operational Command together with other components of the Special Operations Unit. The distance to the target from Ukraine’s state border is approximately 800 km.

Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez LLC is one of the largest oil refineries in the aggressor country and is part of the Lukoil Group. Its capacity is approximately 17 million metric tons of oil per year.

The plant produces automotive gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, fuel oil, bitumen, sulfur, and other petroleum products. It is involved in meeting the needs of the Russian occupiers.

Zelenskyy emphasized that in just one day, Ukraine imposed “long-range sanctions” against 16 Russian targets.

“In particular, there were long-range strikes against oil facilities—Russia’s oil coffers that are financing the war. We also struck airfields, a missile unit, and infrastructure constantly used to launch attacks on Ukraine. Our sanctions also hit a military enterprise and Russian logistics,” the head of state said in his statement.

The president emphasized that the war must be returned to where it came from. He stated that Ukraine is responding to enemy strikes and is doing so in a way that ensures “the cost of the war for the aggressor inevitably rises.”
