Scientists Explain How Music Affects Our Emotions

Your favorite songs can have a particularly powerful effect.

Music can be an effective tool for managing emotions, improving mood, and reducing anxiety, according to Psychology Today (translation by Charter97.org).

Psychologists note that a person’s emotional response depends largely not only on the events taking place, but also on how they interpret them. Music can intervene in this process by shifting attention and helping to break out of a negative train of thought.

“Music is an extremely valuable tool for regulating emotions,” the authors write.

Favorite songs can have a particularly strong effect. Uplifting music can quickly improve your mood, boost your energy, and help you focus. At the same time, sad songs can also be helpful: they allow you to distance yourself from a difficult situation and focus on the music itself. Familiar lyrics also help express feelings that a person may find difficult to articulate on their own.

Music also affects one’s physical state. People instinctively start moving to its rhythm, tapping their feet or dancing, and the body’s internal rhythms can adjust to the tempo of the song. Studies also show that dancing can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in young people.
Memories play a special role. Songs associated with important events from the past can instantly bring back the emotions tied to them. That’s why experts recommend creating playlists of songs that remind you of pleasant moments in your life.
However, music is not a universal cure for a bad mood. Its effect varies from person to person and is sometimes short-lived. “Active engagement with music is crucial,” the authors note. It’s especially helpful not just to listen to songs, but to sing along, move, or tap out the beat.
