Armenia Is Saying Goodbye To Russia For Good

Yerevan no longer considers Russia a “strategic partner.”

The Armenian government’s approved program for 2026–2031 makes no mention of the Russian Federation as a strategic ally.

This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, according to Arka News Agency .

Following the events of September 2022 and the failure of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and Russia to fulfill their security obligations, it is difficult to speak of a strategic partnership, the politician says.

“It all happened right before your eyes. If I write ‘strategic partnership,’ you’ll ask: What happened in September 2022? Did the CSTO and Russia fail to fulfill their security obligations? They did not,” he says.

The government’s approved program for 2026–2031 states that Armenia intends to transform and deepen its partnership with Russia.

However, the Russian Federation is not mentioned as a strategic ally.

In 2024, Armenia announced that it was suspending its participation in the CSTO. Pashinyan cited the Organization’s failure to fulfill its security obligations to Armenia as the reason.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry also stated that Yerevan is refraining from funding CSTO activities.

However, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had previously stated that Armenia remains a member of the organization, supports its decisions, but does not participate in its meetings.
