Axios: The U.S. Is Close To Finalizing A Deal On Venezuela's Oil Fields

The U.S. is close to striking a deal with Venezuelan authorities to acquire a stake in projects to develop more than ten of the country’s active oil fields. This was reported by Axios, citing two U.S. officials.

According to one of the publication’s sources, the fields in question have the potential to produce up to 90 million barrels of oil per day. Previously, they were controlled by certain officials and managers linked to the government of Nicolás Maduro. Some of them were later convicted, the source notes, without providing details. In addition, according to the source, some of the fields were previously effectively controlled by China.

The negotiations are being led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Venezuela’s acting president Delsy Rodríguez, the publication notes. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller is also playing an important role. One official said that Venezuelan authorities are reacting sensitively to plans to transfer natural resources to the U.S. “We are doing everything we can to show how this will benefit the Venezuelan people,” the Axios source said.

The U.S. presence in Venezuela became possible after American special forces kidnapped the country’s dictator, Nicolás Maduro, in January 2026. Leadership of Venezuela passed to his deputy, Delcy Rodríguez. In May, the NYT reported that the U.S. company Exxon Mobil was in talks to acquire oil production rights in Venezuela.
