Greek F-16s Intercepted A Turkish Drone

A drone violated the country's airspace.
On the morning of Friday, August 28, a Turkish drone violated Greek airspace, flying over the Aegean Sea in the area between the islands of Samothrace and Lemnos. Greek F-16 fighter jets were forced to intercept the intruder, according to the publication Kathimerini.
What made this incident particularly dangerous was that the drone was near the runway at Alexandroupoli Airport just as a passenger plane was attempting to take off. The incident was resolved thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Civil Aviation Authority and fighter jet pilots—they managed to divert the drone without jeopardizing the safety of the commercial flight.
Nevertheless, air traffic controllers took extra precautions: the crew of the passenger plane was instructed to adjust its flight path and continue flying at a lower altitude until the aircraft had left the danger zone. After that, the flight continued as usual and ended safely with a landing at Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos Airport.
The Greek PASOK party has already responded to the incident with an official statement, calling it a “very serious incident.” According to the party, the drone’s violation of the flight information zone just a few steps away from the city’s airport clearly demonstrates that Turkey’s provocations against Greece continue to escalate.
This incident is not the first in the long history of tense relations between the two countries. Disputes over sovereignty in the Aegean Sea and the airspace above it between Athens and Ankara have been ongoing since at least the 1970s. In addition to maritime borders, the countries also cannot agree on energy exploration rights in certain areas of the sea, and another source of friction is the issue of the continental shelf and the status of Greek islands located in close proximity to the Turkish coast.
