NASA's New Telescope Has Set Out To Search For Habitable Worlds

His path leads to the edges of the universe.

NASA has successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is expected to help scientists study dark energy and dark matter, black holes, and planets beyond the Solar System. This was reported by the BBC.

The launch took place on Sunday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. About 30 minutes after launch, the telescope separated from the SpaceX rocket and began its journey to its operational position approximately one million miles from Earth.

Roman’s main feature is its enormous field of view. According to NASA, it will be able to cover an area of the sky roughly 100 times larger than that of the Hubble and James Webb telescopes. The agency expects to discover tens of thousands, and possibly up to 100,000, new exoplanets.

“Roman will change the way we look at the universe,” said NASA spokesperson Nikki Fox.

The telescope will also study processes related to dark matter and dark energy. Together, scientists estimate, they make up about 95% of the universe, yet their nature remains one of the greatest mysteries of modern science.

One of the mission’s goals will be to search for worlds potentially suitable for life. “One of NASA’s main questions is: Are we alone in the universe?” said Fox.

Roman’s primary mission is scheduled to last five years, though the spacecraft could operate for up to ten. Scientists hope that its observations will enable the creation of large-scale maps of galaxies and provide a better understanding of how the universe has changed over billions of years.
