WSJ: Leaks About The Pentagon's Ammunition Stockpiles Are Driving Trump Crazy

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered new investigations into leaks regarding the Pentagon’s ammunition stockpiles, as these reports “drive him crazy,” writes The Wall Street Journal reports, citing officials and advisers.

According to the sources, Trump has expressed dissatisfaction in private conversations with officials and aides over reports on ammunition stockpile levels, believing that this information could embolden Iran and weaken the U.S. position in the conflict. Officials said the president has been “very annoyed” by the leaks for several weeks. According to one of the sources, the negative media headlines are “literally driving him crazy.”

Trump’s “rage” led to discussions with the Pentagon and the president’s national security team regarding U.S. weapons stockpiles. The U.S. leader, sources said, spoke by phone with Defense Secretary Pete Hegset and his deputy, Steve Fineberg, who oversees the ramp-up of ammunition production. According to those familiar with the matter, an emergency meeting was convened that same evening with other high-ranking Pentagon officials to explore ways to rapidly ramp up ammunition production.

Hegset, Fineberg, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kane are also holding closed-door meetings with Republican lawmakers in an effort to secure support for the funding request. The Trump administration has requested an unprecedented amount of annual funding for the Pentagon—$1.5 trillion, including $52.9 billion for ammunition.

According to advisers, Trump’s dissatisfaction with the situation surrounding the war with Iran is growing, as he sees no effective ways to compel Tehran to return to the nuclear deal and end the conflict.

“The United States has the most powerful military in world history and possesses more than enough firepower to carry out any operation ordered by the president—anytime, anywhere,” said White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt. “Anyone entrusted with access to classified military information who leaks it to the media is betraying the trust placed in them [by Trump] and violating federal law; such individuals must be held accountable to the full extent of the law. President Trump intends to ensure compliance with this without any exceptions,” she added.

CNN also reports that Trump is angry over reports of dwindling ammunition stocks, believing that this weakens his position in the Iran negotiations. According to senior U.S. officials, in recent days the president has expressed dissatisfaction in private conversations that the leaks are making the country look weak at a critical moment. At last week’s cabinet meeting at Camp David, an irritated Trump raised the issue of how the media is covering the ammunition shortage. According to sources, he was not upset by the supply issues themselves, but rather by the fact that this information surfaced at a pivotal moment in the conflict, when the U.S. is seeking to project strength.

According to the WSJ, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Hegset during the meeting. CNN sources, however, claim that
the White House chief’s anger was not directed at the Pentagon chief. “He never blamed Pete. It’s all about the leakers,” one of them said. The president himself wrote on Truth Social that he is “extremely pleased with how Pete Hegset is doing.”

According to officials, Trump has instructed the Justice Department to identify those within the administration whom he calls “traitors.” When asked about ammunition reserves, the U.S. leader told reporters, “We always need more.” However, he assured them that the U.S. is “in a very good position” and that the country has “huge ammunition reserves.”
