A simple walk can be more beneficial than an intense workout.
A short, intense workout isn't always enough to make up for many hours of virtually no movement. An experiment showed that sustained moderate activity throughout the day can provide metabolic benefits even without strenuous exercise, according to "Cursor".
More than 300 volunteers participated in the study. They were divided into several groups with different activity regimens, including short bursts of intense exercise and longer periods of moderate-intensity activity. A separate group did not perform any specifically assigned workouts.
When comparing the results, the researchers found that the longest duration of physical activity offered benefits across a range of metabolic indicators.
One possible explanation lies in the duration of muscle activity. While walking, muscles continuously consume energy and participate in glucose utilization, and movement maintains blood circulation and increases total daily energy expenditure.
This does not mean that intense workouts are useless. They help build endurance, maintain physical fitness, and—with the right exercises—strengthen muscles. However, one hour of exercise does not negate the effects of a largely sedentary lifestyle the rest of the time.
Therefore, it’s not just going to the gym that matters, but also daily physical activity. You can increase it by going for walks, walking part of the way to work, moving around after meals, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
Walking also has a practical advantage: it requires no equipment and is suitable for many people who find it difficult to perform high-intensity exercises.
