Polish Train Drivers Have Announced A Nationwide Protest

Train delays are expected on the Polish railway network. Train engineers have announced a nationwide protest—on Friday, September 11, trains will pass through railroad crossings at a safe speed of 20 kilometers per hour, according to "Polish Radio".
The chairman of the Polish Railway Engineers’ Union Leszek Mentech stated that the protest is a response to the fatal accident in Sokolniki-Suche.
“There will likely be train delays tomorrow, possibly even significant ones. However, we believe it is better to put up with such delays for one day than to allow new casualties on Polish railways,” said the head of the train drivers’ union.
Leszek Mentech stated that, in accordance with the Labor Code, workers have the right to refuse to perform their duties if they consider continuing to work to be dangerous. The union leader emphasized that railway workers did not resort to such a decision, and that the chosen form of protest enjoys broad support. The unions are demanding that urgent measures be taken to improve railway safety.
The announced protest is a response to yesterday’s accident. As a result of a collision between a truck and a train at a railroad crossing in Sokolniki-Sukhi, one person was killed, about twenty others were injured, and several people are in serious condition. There were about 120 passengers on the Intercity train, which was traveling from Lublin to Szczecin. According to preliminary findings from the investigation, the truck driver drove onto the railroad crossing despite the red signal.
