Anastasia Kukhta And Irina Tokarchuk Have Been Released

They have served their full sentences.

Political prisoners Anastasia Kukhta and Irina Tokarchuk were released on September 10. This was reported by the human rights center “Viasna”. They have fully served their sentences.

As a reminder, Anastasia Kukhta is a social activist from Minsk. She was detained in February 2022 under an administrative charge, and her home was searched. She was subsequently re-detained under Article 342 as part of a criminal case involving group actions that grossly violated public order. She was also charged under Part 3 of Article 361 for calling for sanctions and under Part 1 of Article 361-1 (creating or participating in an extremist group).

In October 2022, she was sentenced to five years in a penal colony; two months later, the KGB added the political prisoner to its list of “terrorists,” and the Ministry of Internal Affairs later added her to its list of extremists. Starting on March 10, 2023, Kukhta was held in a women’s prison. In May 2023, Anastasia’s mother died, but she was not allowed to attend the funeral.

Irina Tokarchuk, the mother of former political prisoner and blogger Olga Tokarchuk, was detained in January 2024 during a raid by security forces targeting relatives of convicts. In August, the 64-year-old woman was found guilty of aiding “extremist” activities (Part 2 of Article 361-4 of the Criminal Code) and sentenced to three years in a penal colony.
