The founder of Yandex signs a contract with the lead developer of military AI from the U.S.

A strategic partnership agreement between Nebius Group—founded by Yandex founder Arkady Volozh—and Palantir Technologies, one of the largest developers of artificial intelligence (AI) systems for the Pentagon, has raised concerns within the Z-community. Volozh and his team had access to all of Yandex’s data on the country’s logistics and economy and took it abroad, stated Z-military correspondent Alexander Kots. “This isn’t just a folder of vulnerabilities. It’s a working model of how Russia functions,” Kots wrote, adding that Palantir could use the information obtained for military purposes, the website The Moscow Times.

“There’s absolutely no doubt that Arkady Volozh will hand over to the Americans at Palantir absolutely everything he knows about the Russian IT sector, our vulnerabilities, and our potential for development. In fact, he’s already done so. The EU doesn’t lift sanctions just like that,” noted Z-blogger Andrey Medvedev. Blogger Yuri Baranchik pointed out that after Yandex was split into Russian and foreign divisions, about 1,300 specialists remained at Nebius, all of whom had left Russia due to the war. “Who allowed this brain drain of highly competent AI experts abroad and failed to create the necessary conditions here for them to do creative work? Why didn’t someone else—Sber, for example—poach them? Silence. Nothing,” Baranchik wrote.

As a result, he said, the cutting-edge technological developments created in Russia “will work against us in the West’s leading AI companies.” The Z-blogger also noted that in Russia, Yandex programmers did not collaborate on projects with the Russian Ministry of Defense because high-ranking positions in the military department were held by people who “stole everything they could and didn’t give a thought to the country’s interests.”

The “Rybary” channel, which is close to the Russian military, recalled that in early September, former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov announced the creation of a defense technology company, with Palantir CEO Alex Karp as its key investor. “The partnership with Volozh adds a third element to this alliance. Palantir has secured direct access to the infrastructure and data of the former ‘Yandex’ team,” — noted “Rybar.”

Nebius and Palantir announced their strategic partnership on September 8. It was noted that the computing power and services of Volozh’s company would be available to Palantir for running AI models under controlled conditions. In 2025, Palantir signed a contract with the U.S. Army worth up to $10 billion and is participating in the Pentagon’s Project Maven. As part of this program, AI technologies are used to analyze intelligence data and identify targets.
