Russia Has Deployed Two Naval Flotillas To The Mediterranean Sea

The Italian Air Force is keeping a close watch on the Russians.

Several groups of Russian ships carrying military cargo are currently in the Mediterranean Sea, and two of them are heading for Tartus, Syria. One of the convoys has already arrived at the port, while the other is sailing across the Mediterranean Sea under surveillance by the Italian Air Force.

According to the maritime portal, the first group consists of the anti-submarine ship *Admiral Levchenko*, the tanker *General Skobelev*, the roll-on/roll-off vessel “Sparta,” and the refueling tanker “Akademik Pashin.”


They passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and were heading east. While transiting the English Channel, the Russian vessels were escorted by several Royal Navy ships, including the destroyer HMS Duncan, the frigate HMS St Albans, and the patrol ship HMS Severn.

According to the publication, the Russian group arrived in Tartus. The roll-on/roll-off ship “Sparta” was spotted unloading at the port.

Satellite images also showed a Russian warship at the pier in Tartus. It may have been moored next to the tanker General Skobelev for protection from the sea or for refueling.

According to The Maritime Executive, another Russian convoy is also heading for Tartus. It is led by the large “Rapucha” class landing ship *Alexander Shabalin*. Traveling with it are the cargo ships “Anastasia” and “Yuri Arshenevsky,” which are subject to sanctions and, according to the publication, were previously used to transport military cargo.

On September 10, this convoy was spotted between Sicily and Tunisia. The day before, the ships had sailed along the Algerian coast. They were monitored from an Italian ATR P-72A military aircraft.

All three vessels had their Automatic Identification System (AIS) turned off. If the convoy continues eastward, it is expected to pass through the area between Crete and Libya, where drone attacks have previously occurred.

Thus, Russia is simultaneously maintaining several naval groups in the Mediterranean Sea, using them to transport military cargo. Some of these ships are headed for Tartus, which remains a key hub for Russian naval logistics in the region, according to the portal’s experts.
