Modi Once Again Called On Putin To End The War Against Ukraine

The Indian Prime Minister addressed the Russian dictator ahead of the BRICS summit.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. The two leaders met in New Delhi ahead of the two-day BRICS summit.

“Dialogue and diplomacy are the right path to resolving conflicts,” Modi told Putin, according to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. He said India is ready to support peace efforts.

The bilateral talks took place ahead of the two-day BRICS summit, which began on Saturday. The war in Ukraine is also on the summit’s agenda—though the Indian Foreign Ministry’s statement refers to conflicts “in the Black Sea region.”

India is one of the largest buyers of Russian oil and grain. The country has experienced difficulties with Black Sea shipping due to strikes by Russia and Ukraine—Indian sailors have already fallen victim to drone attacks.

New Delhi, which maintains close ties with both its Western partners and Moscow, has generally taken a pragmatic stance on the conflict since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

In late August, at a meeting in Kyrgyzstan, Modi had already stepped up his rhetoric, calling on Putin to end hostilities right in front of the cameras. At that time, he stated: “The path from endless war to its conclusion must be taken.” Putin replied that Russia was, in fact, already on that path.

It remains unclear just how direct Modi’s words were during the latest meeting in New Delhi—the Indian media did not publish any video of his statements. Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov merely confirmed that the topic of Ukraine was discussed.
