That's a world record.
Referees issued a record 53 red cards in the semifinals of the Minas Gerais State Youth Championship in Brazil. The match ended with the police being called in due to disturbances at the stadium.
The match between “Uberlândia” and “Mamore” was part of a tournament for players under 20. Early in the second half, a conflict erupted on the field: one of the Mamore players insulted his opponents while celebrating a goal, after which a mass brawl broke out.
As a result, 43 players were sent off. Eight members of the coaching staff and two representatives of Uberlândia’s board of directors also received red cards. In total, the referees issued 53 red cards, setting a world record.
The previous record was 36 send-offs: it was set in 2011 during a fifth-division match in Argentina between “Atlético Claypol” and “Victoriano Arenas,” according to the BBC.
