Europe Has Its Own Strait Of Hormuz

A military economist called for blocking Russia's access to the Baltic Sea.
German military economist Marcus Koipp has called for blocking Russia, the aggressor nation, from exiting the Baltic Sea. He made this statement in a commentary for Frankfurter Rundschau, published on September 13.
Koipp noted that Europe also has its own Strait of Hormuz. This is the Skagerrak Strait between Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, which is the only navigable route from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea and the Atlantic. The Skagerrak is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
According to the military economist, blocking this route would deal a powerful blow to Russia, but such a move would require political courage on the part of the EU. Koipp emphasized that Vladimir Putin understands only the language of force. In his view, the European Union is only now beginning to “overcome its own fear of Russia and develop something like a backbone.” Therefore, he added, Europe is still far from adopting such a stance.
The economist supported the EU’s new sanctions against Russia, while calling the previous packages insufficiently tough. He called for tougher measures against Russia’s “shadow fleet,” citing Italy as an example, where naval forces stop and search ships.
According to him, Europe has all the means to take such actions; the question is simply one of will. He emphasized that this is precisely the stance needed if the EU is serious about defending itself against Russian aggression, since closing the Skagerrak would inflict far greater damage on the Russian economy than all previous sanctions packages combined.
