A New Wave Of Emigration Panic Has Swept Across Russia

The number of relocation requests has increased nearly eightfold.
This summer, Russians began to think more often about emigrating amid rumors of a new mobilization, tighter internet restrictions, and economic problems. There hasn’t yet been a mass exodus comparable to the one in the fall of 2022, but more and more people are looking for ways to leave in advance, writes Associated Press (translation by Charter97.org).
The “Ark” project, which helps Russians settle abroad, has recorded a sharp increase in inquiries. Since mid-July, the project has been describing a “wave of panic,” and the number of requests to relocate in August was nearly eight times higher than in May. “We see that people are preparing to emigrate and are exploring their options,” said the project’s founder, Anastasia Burakova.
One of the main reasons cited is fear of a new mobilization following the State Duma elections. The Kremlin has repeatedly dismissed such a scenario, although all signs point to it. Diplomats have also noticed more Russians in Georgia and Armenia, who may be trying to leave before a possible draft.
For some Russians, it’s not just about the war. Internet restrictions are already making it difficult to work, especially for those in digital professions. Due to the blocks, some have had to constantly switch VPN servers.
Others are leaving Russia because of repression and violations of civil liberties. The Kremlin authorities have begun persecuting supporters of the Yabloko party.
One Russian described the situation even more bluntly: “We live in a huge digital prison. You can’t say anything, you can’t do anything—you have absolutely no rights.”
