Pentagon: A Strong Ukraine Is Key To Europe's Security

Washington urged its allies not to waver in their support for Kyiv.

Europe must step up its support for Ukraine while simultaneously accelerating its own rearmament. This was stated by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, according to the page U.S. Department of War (translation by Charter97.org).

European countries are already taking on greater responsibility for their own defense and for assisting Kyiv. This process is yielding concrete results.

“Europe’s more active assumption of greater responsibility for its own defense is fully consistent with a strong and viable Ukrainian defense,” the undersecretary stated.

Colby specifically highlighted the actions of Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian army is holding the front line, preventing Russian forces from advancing further, and repelling air attacks.

Washington believes that Ukraine’s ability to contain the Russian offensive is important not only for the country itself but also for all of Europe. Ukraine’s experience shows that a strong defense can halt the enemy’s advance and prevent it from seizing new territories.

At the same time, the U.S. does not expect the war to end quickly. The deputy secretary stated that Russia is rebuilding its armed forces and defense industry, so allies must be prepared for a protracted conflict.

Europe should increase shipments of ammunition and other weapons needed by Ukraine, and should also begin preparing now for long-term procurements to rebuild the Ukrainian army and strengthen its own armed forces.

“Support for Ukraine contributes to Europe’s security by helping to restore Europe’s military power and industrial capacity,” Colby said.

He also urged allies not to let up in their efforts and to translate the policy decisions already made into concrete deliveries, investments, and the expansion of defense production.

“Europe has already demonstrated that it is capable of playing a leading role in ensuring the continent’s security. Now we must build on that potential,” Colby said.
