Trump's Approval Rating Has Risen, But The Democrats Have Gained The Upper Hand Ahead Of The Election

The approval rating of U.S. President Donald Trump has risen slightly after falling to a record low. At the same time, his Republican Party's standing has worsened ahead of the midterm congressional elections.

Currently, 35% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance as president. At the end of August, that figure stood at 33%—the lowest it had been during his entire second term.

At the same time, 63% of those surveyed opposed the U.S. leader’s proposal to pay Americans $5,000 each if Republicans retain control of Congress.

Democrats Lead Republicans

The results of the upcoming congressional elections are even more unfavorable for Trump and his party.

In a hypothetical nationwide vote for congressional candidates, 44% of respondents said they would support Democrats, while 37% said they would vote for Republicans.

Thus, the Democrats hold a 7-percentage-point lead. Reuters notes that this is the largest lead for the Democratic Party in such polls since Trump returned to the White House in 2025.

At the same time, for the first time in the past decade, Americans have come to trust the Democrats slightly more when it comes to managing the economy, although the lead remains small.

Voter sentiment is particularly influenced by the fallout from the war with Iran, which Trump launched in February. The conflict has caused disruptions in oil supplies and rising fuel prices, which have impacted American households.

Trump’s large-scale construction projects in Washington, D.C.—in particular, the White House ballroom—have become a separate source of discontent. About two-thirds of those surveyed consider such spending a low priority, and the project is opposed not only by Democrats but also by about a quarter of Republicans.

The U.S. midterm elections will take place in November. If the Republicans lose control of even one chamber, it could significantly complicate Trump’s ability to advance his political agenda before the end of his presidential term.
