Zelenskyy: In This War, There Is No Longer A Victory For Both Sides
Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The President of Ukraine spoke about Putin's "crazy idea."

In Russia’s war against Ukraine, there can no longer be victory for either side—only a cessation of hostilities to save human lives. At the same time, some partners mistakenly believe that Putin wants only a portion of Ukrainian territory.

This is stated in an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for CBC News.

Zelenskyy stated: We’ll have to change Putin’s mind.

“He has the largest territory in the world—does he really need just a few kilometers? That’s why it’s very strange when some partners say: he only needs this part of Ukraine, just these few kilometers and that’s it,” the president noted.

According to him, this is “a crazy idea” —Putin doesn’t want kilometers, but all of Ukraine as part of Russia. The Kremlin’s goal is much broader than acquiring a separate piece of land—it’s about the country’s complete subjugation.

The President of Ukraine also commented on the idea of a solution that would benefit both Russia and Ukraine.

“Between us, there can be no win-win in this war. Because of so many human casualties, it ceased to be a victory for both sides on the very first day,” Zelenskyy said.

According to him, the only real victory now is simply to stop the war for the sake of human lives, rather than to seek a formula that is equally beneficial to both sides.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine and the U.S. are in constant dialogue and continue negotiations—the American side, he said, is taking various measures to provide support.

At the same time, regarding sanctions, the Ukrainian president noted that the U.S. should act more forcefully and decisively to completely destroy Russia’s ability to wage war.

Zelenskyy explained that the U.S. side had asked that details of the negotiations not be disclosed to the media while the ideas discussed are still being worked out. Preparations are currently underway for the president’s meeting with Donald Trump in New York, which is scheduled for late September.
