A Loud Noise Rang Out In The Sky Over Central Poland

The military command explained its origin.

Today, September 17, a loud noise was heard in central Poland during the morning. According to readers of Charter97.org, residents of Piaseczno, near Warsaw, clearly heard the rumbling in the sky.

Later, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces (DORSZ) reported that the loud sound was caused by military fighter jets breaking the sound barrier, according to onet.pl.

Earlier today, residents of the Lublin and Podkarpackie provinces in Poland received an alert from the Government Security Center (RCB) regarding the threat of an air attack. Earlier, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that, in connection with Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory, military aircraft had begun patrolling Polish airspace.

Due to the need to ensure freedom of movement for military aircraft, airports in Lublin and Rzeszów have temporarily suspended flights.

“We would like to inform you that the loud booms heard earlier today in central Poland were caused by military fighter jets breaking the sound barrier. The aircraft were scrambled to ensure the security of Polish airspace during the Russian Federation’s strikes with jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles against targets in western Ukraine,” — the Operational Command stated in a later post on X.

The command emphasized that the air operations were conducted under control, in accordance with current safety standards and procedures.

“We are still verifying the data from our systems, but we have initial indications that the [drone] most likely either struck the target or was destroyed 4 km across the border, on the Ukrainian side,” — said Lieutenant Colonel Jacek Goryszewski, a spokesperson for the Armed Forces Operational Command, in an interview with PAP.

He added that since it was a jet-powered drone rapidly approaching the border, fighter jets were scrambled to ensure the security of Polish airspace.
