Lithuanian President: We’re Not Wearing Rose-colored Glasses; We See Lukashenko For Who He Really Is

There is a clear understanding of what is happening in Belarus.

Although Washington continues its dialogue with Minsk and is easing some sanctions, the Belarusian regime remains unchanged. Lithuania supports the European Union’s sanctions on the export of potash fertilizers. As reported by LRT, the country’s president Gitanas Nausėda stated this.

“We have our position, and we have made it clear. In some cases, it aligns with the EU’s position. A similar ban on the export of Belarusian fertilizers is in effect at the EU level. It has been extended for 12 months; we will revisit the issue early next year, when Lithuania holds the EU Council presidency,” Nausėda said.

The Lithuanian president noted that he is not wearing rose-colored glasses and continues to see Lukashenko “for who he really is,” and that he has a clear understanding of what is happening in Belarus.

“We would like to caution against equating certain humanitarian successes—achieved solely due to U.S. pressure—with broader political and security changes in Belarus. Despite these humanitarian gestures, the overall security situation remains virtually unchanged,” he said.

Nausėda emphasized that drones are flying into Lithuania from Belarus, illegal migrants continue to arrive from that country, and that Minsk, among other things, is increasing the nuclear threat on NATO’s borders by planning to expand the Ostrovets Nuclear Power Plant.

At the same time, the Lithuanian president welcomed the release of political prisoners and promised the United States all possible assistance from Lithuania.

“Lithuania will continue to provide the necessary support to the U.S. humanitarian mission and to the released political prisoners so that they can cross the Lithuanian-Belarusian state border, and will provide all necessary assistance,” Nausėda stated.
