And they killed many Russian officers.
The Ukrainian military was able to advance further than planned as part of Operation "Vivaldi". During the offensive in the Donetsk region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine eliminated a significant number of Russian officers and substantially increased the pool of Russian prisoners available for exchange.
This complex operation was successful, in particular, thanks to the information blackout. On September 16, the deputy commander of the 3rd Army Corps Maksym Zhorin provided details during an appearance on “Suspilne”.
“‘A difficult situation has arisen in the Lyman area’: why the operation was launched
The reason for developing the “Vivaldi” plan was the difficult situation that had arisen in the Lyman area, Maxim Zhorin explained. The Russian military attempted to carry out their usual scenario of seizing a populated area, cutting off logistics, and then directly destroying the city itself.
This operation was planned to prevent the Russians from carrying out this plan and establishing a foothold from which to encircle Kramatorsk and Slavyansk.
“This operation was initiated precisely to prevent that from happening—to ensure they could not establish a foothold for the capture of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk,” explained Maxim Zhorin.
According to him, the military’s task was to prevent the Russians from advancing into Ukrainian rear areas and to clear the territory.
Eliminating Russian officers, replenishing the prisoner exchange pool, and advancing further
Operation “Vivaldi” also yielded many other significant results. First and foremost, according to Zhorin, this involved the elimination of a large number of occupiers. He reported that the Ukrainian military had eliminated a fairly large number of enemy officers. A considerable number of occupying forces were taken prisoner, which made it possible to carry out one of the largest replenishments of the prisoner exchange pool in a long time.
“During this operation, a fairly large number of enemy officers were also eliminated, and a significant portion of the enemy’s personnel were taken prisoner. This is likely the largest addition to the prisoner-exchange pool by Ukraine in recent years,” —
the military official stated.
The deputy commander of the 3rd Army Corps also reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to keep their advance secret, in particular thanks to the “Iron Dome” system. It consists of a large number of various electronic warfare systems, and during Operation “Vivaldi,” the system destroyed approximately 20,000 enemy drones.
In addition, Zhorin noted that Operation “Vivaldi” is actually only the first of four planned phases. The Ukrainian military not only succeeded in completing all assigned tasks but also continued to advance beyond what was planned.
As a reminder, on September 15, it was reported that in the Lyman area the 3rd Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out Operation “Vivaldi”, during which it cleared 85 square kilometers of territory of enemy infiltrators.
