Swedish Prime Minister Resigns After Election Defeat

The center-left opposition won a majority in parliament.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson resigned after the election results were announced, in which the center-left opposition emerged victorious, according to SVT reports.
Shortly after the election results were announced, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said he had submitted his resignation to the Speaker of Parliament.
“The election results may have created difficult conditions for forming the next government, as various statements made by the parties prior to election day could pose an obstacle to any possible government formations and coalitions,” Kristersson stated in his letter to the Speaker.
He noted that constructive openness on the part of the parties in Parliament is necessary to find a prime minister whom the Riksdag can accept.
“To ensure this work begins immediately, I hereby request to be relieved of my duties as prime minister,” Kristersson wrote.
The prime minister and other government ministers are relieved of their posts but continue to perform their duties until the new government is sworn in.
The leader of the Christian Democrats party Ebbe Busch noted on social media that it is now up to the Speaker to begin the process of determining who will form the new government.
“I want to thank Ulf Kristersson for his leadership as Prime Minister, who, together with us and the rest of the ‘blue-and-yellow’ team, has set Sweden on a new course,” she said.
Sweden’s center-left opposition parties won 176 seats in the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, September 13, while the right-wing bloc currently in power won 173 seats.
