Cole Discussed Belarus With The President And Prime Minister Of Lithuania

The focus was on political prisoners and threats to regional security.

The U.S. President’s Special Envoy for Belarus John Cole, upon his return from Minsk, met with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and Primeer-minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius. During the talks, they discussed the situation in Belarus, the release of political prisoners, and regional security issues, according to lrv.lt.

Following his meeting with Cole on September 16, Nausėda stated that the release of some political prisoners does not signify a change in the regime in Minsk. According to him, the humanitarian progress achieved was the result of U.S. pressure, but the overall security situation remains virtually unchanged.

The Lithuanian president noted that drones are flying into Lithuania from Belarusian territory, the influx of illegal migrants continues, and Minsk is escalating the nuclear threat near NATO’s borders. As an example, he cited plans to expand the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets.

At the same time, Nausėda welcomed the agreement to release some political prisoners and promised the U.S. comprehensive assistance. Lithuania is ready to support the U.S. humanitarian mission and to assist the released prisoners as they cross the Belarusian-Lithuanian border.

John Cole also held a meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius. The Lithuanian prime minister stated that the country highly values the U.S.’s efforts to secure the release of Belarusian political prisoners and reduce tensions in the region.

Sinkevičius emphasized that American diplomatic engagement helps mitigate hybrid threats and strengthen the security of Lithuania and its neighboring countries. He also asked that Donald Trump, the U.S. president, be thanked for his efforts in the area of regional security.

According to the Lithuanian prime minister, the more attention Washington pays to the region, the greater its security becomes. Sinkevičius assured that Lithuania will continue to be a reliable ally of the United States.
