Pashinyan Made A Strong Statement About The Russian Military Base

Yerevan is ready to discuss the withdrawal of Russian troops.

Relations between Yerevan and Moscow continue to deteriorate. The withdrawal of Russian troops from Armenia is already being discussed at the highest levels.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a statement to that effect on September 17, according to Dialog.UA.

He noted that it was Russia that first raised the issue of closing the Russian military base in Gyumri. And, according to Pashinyan, he will not “cry and wail” over this. The prime minister made it clear that he no longer considers Russia and its troops a factor of strength and deterrence.

“I’m saying: the 102nd military base (Russian Armed Forces—ed.) and the events of September 2022 have shown that it is not of vital importance to Armenia’s security… If they decide to withdraw, we won’t object. And I’ll say it plainly: the presence of the 102nd Military Base adds nothing to Armenia’s security, and we saw this during the events of September 2022. We don’t need this base!” Pashinyan said.

It should be noted that in 2024, Armenia began a large-scale expulsion of Russian border guards who had been stationed there since 1992. Moscow’s influence over the country is rapidly waning.
