Zelenskyy: China Can Stop Putin, But It Isn't Doing So

The President of Ukraine stated that Beijing exerts significant influence over Russia.
China could find a way to push Russian dictator Vladimir Putin toward negotiations, but it is not doing so because Beijing is not on Ukraine’s side in this war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this in an interview with NHK.
He emphasized that he has never seen China put pressure on Russia to end the war.
“Perhaps they do this during some of their bilateral meetings. I don’t know. But I believe they have a huge influence on Russia, especially now that numerous sanctions have been imposed, there is a shadow fleet, and the energy and banking systems have been cut off. Of course, China could find a way to push Putin toward negotiations. I’m sure of it. But they haven’t done so. And if you can but don’t, is that support or not?” Zelenskyy noted.
He believes that China is largely on Russia’s side.
“It’s a shame that China isn’t on our side in this war—politically speaking. It’s not even about weapons. It’s about political will. And it’s a shame because strong leaders, including China, could stop this war instantly. It’s a shame they aren’t on our side. But that’s not a problem. It’s just a disappointment,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.
According to him, the problem is that China “doesn’t take a neutral stance,” but rather “leans slightly more toward Russia.” He added that this isn’t about the direct supply of weapons, but rather about greater openness toward Russia and a willingness to help Russia more than Ukraine—and in the case of such a large country, “a little” means a lot.
Zelenskyy said that North Korean-made missiles had landed in Ukraine, but he had not seen any Chinese ones.
“But I know that their technology is making its way into Russia. The equipment they use comes from China, likely along with specialists and technology,” he added.
