Operation "Vivaldi" Caught The Russian Army Off Guard

Ukraine has once again demonstrated its ability to launch successful offensives.

Ukrainian troops are advancing near Lyman, recapturing territory and forcing Russian forces to retreat. The counteroffensive shows that, after several years of trench warfare, Kyiv is once again capable of conducting successful ground operations, writes David Kirichenko for CEPA.

According to official data from the Ukrainian side, Operation “Vivaldi,” which the 3rd Army Corps had been conducting in secrecy for several months, has already has made it possible to recapture approximately 75 square kilometers of territory. However, the offensive is not yet complete.
“Vivaldi, as you know, has four seasons. And this is only the first… Good news is just around the corner,” said corps commander Andriy Biletsky.

The advance of Ukrainian forces was aided by a combination of strikes on Russian rear areas, drones, infantry, and armored vehicles. Ukraine first weakens Russian defenses and then uses mechanized units to capture territory.

Russian commanders also created the conditions for Kyiv’s offensive themselves. Due to falsified reports on the situation at the front, the Russian command underestimated the threat and failed to deploy the necessary reinforcements in time.

It is particularly telling that Ukrainian forces once again managed to use tanks and other heavy equipment for maneuvering. This is happening despite the huge number of FPV drones, which have made armored vehicles much more vulnerable.

“The key to the counteroffensive was Ukraine’s combined-arms operations,” writes Kirichenko.

That said, this does not yet constitute a large-scale breakthrough. The advance is complicated by artillery, drones, and supply issues as troops move further from their own positions.

However, the situation near Lyman demonstrates the main point: Ukraine is capable not only of defending itself but also of regaining the initiative. Kyiv is gradually finding ways to penetrate the drone-saturated battlefield and deploy armored vehicles where conditions permit.

“Offensive operations are still possible in modern warfare,” notes retired Australian General Mick Ryan.
