South Korean President Accuses Ukraine Of Breaching A Secret Agreement

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated that Ukraine violated a non-disclosure agreement by disclosing information about transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war to Seoul. A public announcement of this could create problems for diplomacy and national security. Lee Jae-myung wrote about this on the social media platform X.

“It was in everyone’s best interest not to disclose this, given the numerous problems that a public announcement could cause, and we agreed to do so,” Lee Jae-myung wrote.

Lee Jae-myung emphasized that the issue of repatriating North Korean prisoners of war is extremely sensitive and could have implications for diplomacy, national security, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. According to him, South Korea and Ukraine agreed not to disclose information about the transfer of prisoners, as this could cause a number of problems.

“One cannot be so cruel and irresponsible when it comes to such vital issues as human lives and national security,” Lee stated.

He also noted that there had been proposals within the South Korean government to make the information about the prisoner transfer public. According to the president, this could have boosted political approval ratings, but the government decided to maintain confidentiality.

“I am not aware of the specific circumstances that prompted the Ukrainian side to violate the agreement and disclose the information, but this is deeply regrettable,” Lee added.

Ukraine’s Response

The Office of the President of Ukraine told Yonhap News Agency that Ukraine had only reported the fact that two North Korean prisoners of war had been handed over to South Korea, without disclosing details of the process. The Ukrainian side believes it would be strange to completely conceal the fact of this handover.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously publicly announced the handover of the two North Korean soldiers during his address to the UN General Assembly. According to him, one of them, upon realizing he had been captured, attempted to take his own life.
